Editor's Note
This is my last issue of the Net, and I have to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me in my role as Christian Education Director at here St. Peter's.  I have loved my job, especially because it has helped me to get to know many of you so much better -- what an amazing community!  You have been a blessing to me and to my family.  I look forward to serving with you, now as a parishioner, as we strive to do God's work.

Wear Red for Pentecost this Sunday, May 19!

An old tradition at Pentecost is for the whole congregation to wear red on Pentecost Sunday. The origins of this tradition are somewhat shrouded in mystery, but the symbolism is rich. Pentecost is a day on which the Church remembers her birth. When the Spirit came to the disciples in Jerusalem, the gift wasn't limited to men only, disciples only, or Jews only, it was shared and affected everyone in proximity.

In that spirit (pun intended) today is a day in which everyone shares in the color of the service. Most Sundays the clergy wear silk vestments that match the color of the season. Pentecost is a day on which all wear the festival color. We remember that all share in the gifts of God's spirit; all share in the work of the Church; all share in the beauty of God's grace.

May 17, 2013

Sarah Anne and George Hills and Sandi and Ernie Thompson invite you to wear red for Pentecost!

Bring Your Covered Dish to this Sunday's Luncheon!

Also on Sunday, May 19, we will wrap up the Sunday School year with our Covered Dish Luncheon.  The whole congregation is invited to stay after the 10:00 service that day to help us recognize and thank all the teachers who have worked with such dedication in our Christian Education program this year.  Since the picnic is potluck, please bring a dish to share; last names A - I, bring a main dish; J - R, bring a side dish or salad; S - Z, bring dessert.   If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Gerry by Friday, May 17, so we will have enough seating for everybody.  (And be ready for a sneak peek at our new children's Sunday School curriculum!)

New Arts Enrichment Program Coming Soon?

St. Peter's Church is exploring the possibility of an after-school academic and arts enrichment program.   The program is intended to help all levels of elementary age students, from those who require a little extra assistance to children who may be gifted in a particular field.   Children who enroll in the program will receive tutoring according to their individual needs and also will participate in the Voice For Life music curriculum, gaining all the benefits of music appreciation and skill.

This is a "win/win" program since tutors will be volunteers and participating families will not be required to make a large financial commitment.  Volunteer tutors will have the satisfaction of making a difference in the future, students will advance academically, and St. Peter's Church will see the growth of an active and vital children's choir.

Right now, we need to know how many people would be willing to serve as  volunteer tutors for children who may need help with reading or who may be especially gifted in math.   If you are willing to help, please contact Tim McKee to let him know your areas of expertise and how much time you might have to offer.

Congratulations to Children's Choir Members

St. Peter's children's choir is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM).  As children progress through the curriculum, they advance to different levels based on their musical proficiency.  This Sunday, we congratulate four members of our children's choir who are ready to progress to a new level:  Carey Bass, Langston Bass, Spencer McKee, and Anna Mondy.  In recognition of their achievement, these children will join the choir in procession, wearing their own choir robes and cottas.  The children will also sing during communion.  Many thanks to Jean Lamphere and an anonymous donor for funding the children's robes and cottas.

Children's Sunday School to Undergo a Transformation Next Fall

In the fall, the children of St. Peter's will experience some exciting changes, from new classroom spaces to a brand-new Sunday School curriculum. How is the new children's Sunday School curriculum going to work?  Which Bible stories will children learn?  What will the new children's education area look like?
Betsey Bass will answer these and other questions on Sunday, May 12, when she presents the work of the Children's Sunday School Curriculum Committee.  The Committee met several times this spring to select the Bible stories our children will learn next year and in years to come.   Listen for Betsey's announcement during the service on May 12, or speak with her at the table in the Foyer to learn about the Committee's exciting plans!
Many thanks to Children's Sunday School Curriculum Committee members  A. L. Addington, Libby Cluett, Debby Cuttino, Lynne Kemp, Father Sam, Father Rem, and Betsey for their work for our children!
May 2, 2013 The children of St. Peter's are going to love the changes to their Sunday morning activities!

Gambling During Coffee Hour?  Yes!

But don't worry --  this is gambling for a good cause!  The youth of St. Peter's continue to prepare for next year's pilgrimage.  During the next few weeks, they will consider several possible destinations for next year's pilgrimage and will choose their destination at the end of the Sunday School year.

Here's how you can help them: by sharing your travel experiences, influencing their choice, and wagering a guess as to the destination they will ultimately select.  Will it be Canada, France, Italy, Greece, the Navajo Indian lands, California, Scotland, England, or another holy place?

Place your name and phone on theWhere in the World Wager Poster for a drawing of a fine wine from the country ultimately chosen. And thank you for supporting our youth!April 28, 2013 George and Ann Hubbs have wagered that the youth will choose France.

And thank you for supporting our youth!

April 18 The Searcys have wagered that the youth will choose Ireland.

It's Official:

The Market at 3 West Ridge is Another Huge Success!

The sale revenues and donations have been totaled and the expenses paid out, and the Episcopal Church Women  are delighted to announce that this year's market at 3 West Ridge raised an incredible $30,000 for our two charities, Horizons Savannah and Park Place Outreach.

Horizons Savannah reports that because this contribution from St. Peter's, they will be opening up their summer enrichment learning program to fifteen pre-kindergarten campers for the very first time this year!  Fifteen Park Place Outreach said that their$15,000 will provide fifteen children with seven nights of safe shelter.

Over seven hundred shoppers visited The Market  this year and were delighted with all the vendor offerings and spring plants available.  But this event could not be possible without the more than one hundred St. Peter's volunteers who did everything, setting up booths, unloading vendor trucks, making food, hosting a vendor dinner, collecting door admissions, tubing event promotion materials, post-show cleanup, and more.  Neither could the donation targets have been achieved without our event sponsors and donors!

A very special thank you goes to our own Stephanie Lindley of Byrd Cookie Company, whose incredible kindness provided us not only with beautiful vendor signage and the bright and attractive shopping bags but also tasty food morsels for Market shoppers.  The wonderful folks at Sandfly BBQ also provided delicious food for our event.   Thanks also to Janet Creasman for her graphic artistry in creating an event logo and branding so eye-catching that it will be utilized for all future Markets!

Finally, the ECW gives its deep appreciation goes to Patty Frothingham and Sharon Grozine, this year's co-chairs of The Market, who piloted a large team of workers effortlessly and cheerfully towards the end goal from start to finish.  In fact, they were such a pleasure to work with that most of the steering committee agreed to do it again next year!  Now that's leadership success!
